What If Everything You Thought You Had to Be Was a Lie?

This weekend, I’m headed to Atlanta, Georgia, to complete a powerful training with Identity Exchange to become a trained Catalyst. This program equips coaches to walk others through a transformative process of uncovering their true identity and living into their God-given destiny. And let me tell you, this journey has already changed my life.
For the past several months, I’ve been immersed in an intensive that helped prepare my heart and mind to receive this next layer of teaching. The foundation laid in this season has been nothing short of sacred. Through it, I’ve begun to truly understand who I am, not just what I do, but who I’ve always been.
When I completed the Identity Exchange process for myself, I was shown that my true identity is: “Lover of People.” Just hearing that felt like coming home. This identity isn’t something I strive for, it's who I am, and always have been. And now, I get to live and lead with that truth at the forefront.
Shedding the Lies We’ve Believed
Here’s something I’ve learned that I believe every woman needs to hear: You were born with an identity.
From the very beginning, you were created with a purpose, a voice, a name spoken by God Himself. But as life unfolds, we often take on the projections and expectations of others; parents, teachers, culture, even our own insecurities. Over time, we start wearing masks, crafted personas designed to win love, safety, or approval. These masks are understandable, even necessary at times, but they are not you.
Eventually, they stop working. They leave us feeling exhausted, disconnected, and unsure of who we really are. We wonder why we feel so unfulfilled, even when life looks "fine" on the outside. That’s the ache of living disconnected from your true identity.
Fear or Love: The Fork in the Road
In his book Living Fearless, Jamie Winship explores two ways we can live: out of fear or out of love.
When we operate from fear, we strive, protect, compare, and compete. We believe there’s not enough; love, time, money, opportunity; and so we fight for scraps. We put on the mask. We hustle for our worth.
But when we live from love, everything changes. We understand we are already enough, already accepted, already loved. We don’t need to prove ourselves or hide behind masks. In love, we live in abundance, of creativity, resources, connection, joy. We partner with others instead of competing. We rest in the truth that God is generous and always has more than enough for all of us.
Living Unmasked and Fully Alive
When we rediscover our true identity, we stop striving and start thriving. We no longer need to perform for acceptance. We know we are deeply loved by God, not broken or lacking, but whole and holy. From that place, we can move confidently into the work we were uniquely created to do.
You don’t have to keep living disconnected from who you truly are.
You don’t have to wear the mask one more day.
You don’t have to stay stuck in fear.
Your destiny is waiting, and the path is already laid out before you.
Journaling Prompts for Deeper Reflection
Take a moment to sit in stillness, and then explore these questions in your journal:
When was the last time I felt truly like myself? What was I doing? Who was I with?
What masks have I been wearing to gain acceptance or avoid rejection?
What lies have I believed about who I am or what I’m capable of?
If I knew I was fully loved, safe, and supported, what would I dare to do?
What might my true identity be? What words, themes, or longings keep rising up in me?
